Ingredients:

  • lean ground beef
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Yellow onions
  • Potatoes
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Montreal steak seasoning
  • Cream cheese
  • Evaporated milk

How to make Hamburger Potato Casserole:

Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a casserole dish.

Heat a skillet over moderately high heat and add the beef and onions.

Cook for 6 minutes or until the meat is no longer pink.

Drain off and discard the grease.

Now add the soup, milk, cream cheese, and seasoning to the ground beef and stir to mix.

Layer the beef mixture, sliced potatoes, and all except ¾ cup of the shredded cheese in the greased casserole dish.

Finish with a beef layer.

Tightly cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 1¼ hours or until the potatoes are tender.

Take off the foil and discard it.

Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and broil for a minute or so, to brown the cheese.

Don’t let it burn.

  • pounds lean ground beef
  • 10½- ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup chopped yellow onions
  • 5 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • tablespoons Montreal steak seasoning
  • 8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
  • 12- ounce can evaporated milk

Can You Make It Ahead?

You can prepare it ahead and keep it refrigerated until it’s time to cook. Put the chilled casserole in the oven and then turn the oven on. If you put the chilled casserole dish in a hot oven, it might crack or break.

Storage Instructions:

Leftovers will keep for up to 4 days in the casserole dish. Cover the dish with foil and keep the leftovers refrigerated.

Variations and Substitutions:

You can have the potatoes peeled or unpeeled, as you prefer, and choose from firm red- or yellow-flesh ones. You could also swap half the cheddar for mozzarella.
